SETSUKO HATA

Lunch & Vocal Jazz Live

The Concert

A Hymn to Life Itself

The music of Setsuko Hata is a hymn to life itself. Thirteen years of musical activity in the United States, and the pursuit of yoga and meditation in India — the experiences, insights, and inner transformations gathered along that journey breathe through each of her compositions. Setsuko continues her work with a single theme: to quietly awaken the life force and sensitivity within each listener, and to offer inspiration toward a freer, richer life.

Held on Saturday, June 27 at the Roppongi jazz club "All of Me," LUNCH & VOCAL JAZZ LIVE is Setsuko's first Tokyo solo concert since relocating back to Japan after fifteen years abroad. The program features jazz standards arranged by Setsuko herself, alongside original works for which she has written the lyrics, composed the music, and created the arrangements.

Rooted in jazz, blues, soul, and funk, the sound is woven by a rich ensemble — piano, bass, and drums joined by trumpet, saxophone, and trombone — where stillness and passion, prayer and joy intersect.

Improvisation among the musicians and reinterpretations of Indian Sanskrit songs as jazz are among the highlights, inviting you on a musical journey that transcends the boundaries of genre and culture.

Within her music lies the trace of a long artistic and inner journey, and a deep message about living fully in this present moment.

SETSUKO HATA

Setsuko Hata

Setsuko Hata. Born in Osaka, Japan — jazz singer, composer, arranger, and Hatha Yoga teacher. A graduate of Osaka City University's Faculty of Human Life Science, Department of Food and Nutrition. She moved to the United States in 2011 to study music.

Over the following thirteen years she worked as a professional jazz singer and composer based in New York, Colorado, and Los Angeles. She studied jazz vocals in New York, and at the University of Northern Colorado graduate school she researched composition and arrangement across a wide range of genres — jazz, big band, orchestra, and film music — becoming the first Japanese national to serve as a teaching assistant there.

Performing across the United States, she produced numerous self-organized concerts, including a solo show at the renowned Catalina Jazz Club in Los Angeles. In 2024 she appeared on the Yomiuri TV documentary program "Gutto! Chikyu-bin," which featured her work as a jazz singer.

In 2024 she spent roughly a year and a half exploring yoga and meditation at the Isha Foundation in India. Completing over 1,750 hours of rigorous training, she earned the Sadhguru-certified Hatha Yoga teacher qualification — a rare certification held by only four teachers in Japan today, of whom she is one.

Her music, while rooted in the jazz tradition, expresses a distinctive worldview of life's inquiry, inner growth, and connection with nature. Relocating her base to Japan in 2026, she works under the vision of "creating a society where each person can blossom into their innate potential." Through music she brings hope and emotion to people's hearts, and as a Hatha Yoga teacher she shares practical tools for enriching one's life.

Through these two approaches — music and yoga — her theme is to awaken the inner life force and possibility within each person.
