Setsuko Hata秦 節子
Jazz Singer. Composer.
Hatha Yoga Teacher.
I am a jazz singer, composer, arranger, and Hatha Yoga teacher from Osaka. I have loved singing since childhood, and music has always been at the center of my life. At 21, however, I experienced depression and bipolar disorder, which became a major turning point.
That experience led me to explore deeply what it means to live with a healthy body and mind, and what true happiness is.
After a three-year leave of absence, I graduated from the Department of Food and Nutrition in the Faculty of Human Life Science at Osaka City University and qualified as a nutritionist. In 2011, I moved to the United States to pursue my dream of a career in music.
For the next 13 years, I worked as a professional jazz singer and composer in New York, Colorado, and Los Angeles. After studying jazz vocals at the City College of New York (CUNY), I pursued graduate studies at the University of Northern Colorado. Alongside jazz vocals, I studied composition, arranging, big band, orchestral music, and film scoring, and became the university’s first Japanese teaching assistant.
While performing throughout the United States, I produced many of my own concerts, including a solo concert at the renowned Catalina Jazz Club in Los Angeles. In 2024, Yomiuri TV’s documentary program Gutto! Chikyubin featured my work as a jazz singer in the United States.
Rooted in the jazz tradition, my music explores the search for meaning in life, inner growth, and our connection to nature, expressing a world that resonates deeply with listeners.
In 2024, I began exploring yoga and meditation at Isha Foundation in India over a period of approximately a year and a half. I completed more than 1,750 hours of rigorous training and became a Sadhguru-certified Hatha Yoga teacher.
From 2026, I am based in Japan, working toward a society where fewer people suffer from stress and depression, and everyone can realize their innate potential. Through music, I share hope and inspiration. As a Hatha Yoga teacher, I offer practical tools for transforming one’s life.
