The Artist
A song for life itself.
Setsuko Hata is a jazz singer, composer, arranger, and Hatha Yoga teacher from Osaka. She graduated from the Department of Food and Nutrition in the Faculty of Human Life Science at Osaka City University. After experiencing and overcoming bipolar disorder at 21, she moved to the United States in 2011 to study music.
For the next 13 years, she worked as a professional jazz singer and composer in New York, Colorado, and Los Angeles. She studied jazz vocals in New York, then pursued graduate studies at the University of Northern Colorado, exploring composition and arranging for jazz, big band, orchestra, and film. She became the university’s first Japanese teaching assistant.
While performing throughout the United States, she produced many of her own concerts, including a solo concert at the renowned Catalina Jazz Club in Los Angeles. In 2024, Yomiuri TV’s documentary program Gutto! Chikyubin featured her work as a jazz singer.
In 2024, she began exploring yoga and meditation at Isha Foundation over approximately a year and a half. She completed more than 1,750 hours of rigorous training and became a Sadhguru-certified Hatha Yoga teacher. She is one of only four certified teachers currently working in Japan.
Rooted in the jazz tradition, Setsuko’s music expresses her distinctive perspective on the search for meaning in life, inner growth, and our connection to nature. From 2026, she is based in Japan, working toward a society where fewer people suffer from stress and depression, and everyone can realize their innate potential. Through music, she shares hope and inspiration, while offering practical tools for transforming one’s life as a Hatha Yoga teacher.
Through the two paths of music and yoga, her work seeks to awaken people’s inner vitality and potential.
